Smögen 90 Proof — 9 Year Old Swedish Single Malt

In addition to its limited Batch and Single Cask bottlings, Smögen also offers a number of standard bottlings. As of 2022, this 90 Proof expression was added to the range. Its name refers to the British Sykes scale as a measure of alcohol content — 90 Proof equates to 51.4% ABV (90:7x4). This is not cask strength; the whisky is diluted to this exact percentage. It matured entirely in bourbon barrels.

The Smögen distillery was founded in 2009 by Pär Caldenby, a Swedish lawyer, whisky enthusiast, and writer. Located on a farm near Hunnebostrand on the Skagerak, north of Gothenburg, it is named after the nearby island of Smögen. The distillery features a 900-litre wash still and a 600-litre spirit still, with a total production capacity of 35,000 litres per year. Smögen has been available as a single malt whisky since 2013.

Tasting notes: Colour: gold. Nose: aromas of juicy berries, salty peat smoke, coal dust, and almonds. Taste: notes of green apples, lemon, sea salt, mint, and peat smoke. The long finish has notes of peat smoke, sea salt, and lemon.
